One Week ~ My First AA Meeting ~ January 17th

Today marks my one week of being Alcohol Free. I had a long conversation yesterday with my long time friend (44 years to be exact) that is 13 years sober. She didn't know what struggles I'd been going through (not a lot did), but I sent her my blog for her to read since I knew she would be a great support for me. She was shocked to read my blog to see that I was suffering from alcoholism. She was so supportive and highly encouraged me to go to a meeting if I was "really serious" and to get a sponsor. So, today, I got up and did exactly that!

Surprisingly, my nerves settled before getting to the meeting. I had peace within and knew that I HAD to do this for me. So, I walked into the meeting to a very warm welcome. I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable I immediately felt. Here I am in a room with people I had never met before but I felt so connected because we all had one thing in common....we were all alcoholics on our own journey. It was truly an amazing feeling. I didn't think I would get up to speak, but when the new comers were asked, I raised my hand first and said "Hi, my name is Stephanie and I am an alcoholic" . I even shared a little of my story and how I got to the meeting. WOW, I did it! I was so proud of myself...I was confident and knew THIS is it! What a HUGE relief that was to get that off my chest! It was SO freeing to openly share and own up to my problem after being in denial all these years.

Tomorrow, I will be attending the "Step Sisters" AA group with a few ladies that I met today. BUT, today, I am grateful that I took the BIG first step in my journey and "showed up" to my first meeting ever to get my first chip, and I pray for many more to come. I am so incredibly thankful for all of the support from my family and friends! I CAN and WILL do day, one minute, one breath at a time!

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. Amen
